Police Shoot At Protesting Students In Edo

Students of Edo State Owned-Tertiary institutions and officials of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), who stormed the state Ministry of Education in a protest, were chased out by operatives of the Nigerian Police, leaving several of them injured.

The students in their large numbers had come from four different institutions to protest against the closure of their schools for the past two months for poor working condition.

The protest according to the student which was said to have been peaceful turned sour after one of the students was shot incidentally by the police to disperse them from gaining entrance into the ministry.

Although the fatality could not be ascertained but a close source said the affected student from College of Education, Ekiadolor, was hit on his stomach by tear gas fired from police gun, and he is in a stable condition but his name could not be immediately verified.

Some of the students, members of civil society and an official of the National Association of Nigerian students, who confirmed the incident, lamented the insensitivity of the state government to the plight of student in the state owned tertiary institution in the state.

Meanwhile there was grid lock along the neighborhood while many of the residents in their areas scampered for safety; just as businesses men and women close their shops.

It will be recalled that NANS had given Edo State Government and various unions in the state owned tertiary institution three days ultimatum to resolve their differences. The lecturers and workers of these institutions have been on strike over unpaid arrears in the last three months.

Deputy coordinator of NANS Zone B, Richard Ekutu, warned that failure to resolve the crisis will lead to street protests.

The protesting students include those in the Institute of Technology and Management, Usen, College of Agriculture, Iguoriakhi, Colleges of Education, Ekiadolor and Igueben.
