INEC issues certificate to new 23 parties

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured Nigerians that it will do its best to address the disturbing trend of vote buying in the country.


Chairman of the commission, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu, gave the assurance while presenting certificates of registration to the 23 newly registered political parties in Abuja on Thursday.

Professor Mahmood urged the new parties to respect their constitutions and ensure internal democracy within their parties.

The INEC chairman also urged the new parties to collaborate with the inter-party advisory council for better consultations.

Expressing worry over vote buying, the chairman urged the parties join the commission to end the menace promising rearrangement of polling units particularly during the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Osun state to avoid vote buying.

Among the new parties that received their certificate of registration are;  Advanced Alliance Party, Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party, African Action Congress, Alliance For A United Nigeria, Alliance Of Social Democrats and Alliance Nation Party.

Others include; Alliance People’s Movement and Alternative Party Of Nigeria.

Registration of the new political parties brings the total number of parties in the country to 91.
