NASS Passes Vote Of Confidence On NNPCL, Security Agencies Over Pipeline Protection

The National Assembly has passed a vote of confidence on Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, and other security agencies for their role in restoring oil production in the country.

At a one-day conference on pipeline security and crude oil theft, the National Assembly dismissed three petitions challenging pipeline surveillance contracts.

In recent weeks, there have been calls for the decentralization of the pipeline surveillance contracts.

The conference brought together leading stakeholders to address these agitations, although the petitioners were notably absent.

At the conference, representatives from NNPCL, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Tantita Security Services, and other security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, highlighted the progress made.

They noted that Nigeria’s oil production, which had dropped to about 960,000 barrels per day in August 2022 due to theft and sabotage, has now significantly improved.

At the conclusion of the conference, the joint committee moved and passed a vote of confidence on all efforts to safeguard the nation’s crude oil production and curb oil theft.

The federal government’s introduction of pipeline surveillance contracts, including the engagement of private security firms and community-based structures, has been credited for this turnaround.

Today, the nation reportedly produces 1.8 million barrels of crude oil per day, a significant improvement over the previous years.
