Tinubu Defends Signing Of Controversial Amended Electoral Act
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, at the State House, Abuja, defended his endorsement of the controversial amended Electoral Act, with urgency. Signing the Act into law on the same day of passage in the legislature, President Tinubu explained that the essence of Democracy is to give room for a robust brainstorming conversation towards nation building.
According to him, it's time for Nigerians to have confidence in the system and believe in the outcome of such .
He noted that even though the entire electoral system is still partly manual, the transmission of such arithmetic calculations is what must be well controlled and monitored.
The National Assembly passed the Electoral Act, 2022 Repeal and Re-Enactment Bill 2026, on Tuesday after intense deliberations and a dramatic division over the controversial Clause 60 on electronic transmission of election results.
Presiding Officers of the National Assembly said the signed document reflected the yearnings of Nigerians.
They said the provisions in the amended Act were carefully designed to respond to public concerns and improve the credibility of the electoral process.
