Senate At Crossroads Over Electoral Act, Holds Emergency Plenary Tuesday
There are indications that the Senate is at crossroads of Electoral Act amendment, precipitating public anger. The Upper Chamber of the National Assembly, therefore, resolved to hold an emergency plenary on Tuesday.
The Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, in a statement on Sunday, announced that the Senate will hold emergency plenary on Tuesday. He said all senators have been requested to attend.
The session has been scheduled to commence at 12 noon, he added.
The Senate has incurred the wrath of the public since passing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill on February 4, but voted down Clause 60(3), which require presiding officers to electronically transmit results from polling units directly to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Result Viewing portal in real time.
The lawmakers replaced it with the current discretionary “transfer” of results, which allows electronic transmission only after votes are counted and publicly announced at polling units.
Senate President Akpabio defended the Senate at a public event, saying the Senate did not reject electronic transmission.
