Reps to Probe MDAS Spending Of Take Off Grants, Bailout Funds, Others

The House of Representatives has resolved to set up a special committee to investigate the use of take-off grants, bailout funds, and other interventions allocated to MDAs, government institutions, and GOEs from 2015 to date.

The committee will assess compliance with regulations, identify cases of mismanagement, and recommend measures to strengthen oversight and accountability.  This decision follows a motion of urgent national importance by Minority Leader Hon. Kingsley Chinda who raised concerns over persistent fund mismanagement that undermines public services.

The House noted that such financial losses deplete resources meant for national development, as outlined in Section 14(2b) of the Constitution. The committee is expected to report back within four weeks. The House also resolved to investigate frequent flight delays in the aviation industry and their economic impact.

Hon. Victor Obuzor, who moved the motion, criticized defaulting airlines for evading liability for damages to travelers.  Lawmakers called for stricter enforcement of penalties against such carriers. Similarly, a bill seeking to establish an independent authority for the registration, regulation, and funding of political parties passed its second reading.

Co-sponsored by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and Hon. Marcus Onobun , the bill aims to transfer political party regulation from INEC to a separate body. Another bill, seeking to establish the National Commission for Decommissioning of Oil and Gas Installations (NC-DOGI) under the Presidency, also passed second reading.

Sponsored by Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, and Hon. Julius O. Ihonvbere, the bill aims to enhance environmental restoration, resource management, and international collaboration. Hon. Francis Waive presented a synopsis on behalf of the sponsors.
