The House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution has acknowledged growing demands for the creation of new states across Nigeria.

During Thursday’s plenary, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu read a letter from the committee, highlighting the numerous proposals submitted and the constitutional requirements that must be met before any state can be approved.

According to the committee, 31 state creation requests have been submitted, with proposals coming from different regions.

The North Central zone has five requests, the North East has four, the North West has five, the South East has five, the South South has four, and the South West has seven.

Among the proposed states are Okun, Okura, Confluence (Kogi), Benue Ala and Apa (Benue), Amana (Adamawa), Katagum (Bauchi), Savannah (Borno), and Muri (Taraba).

Other suggestions include new states from Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Enugu, Cross River, Delta, Rivers, Ondo, Oyo, Lagos, Ogun, and Osun.

The committee stressed that Section 8 of the 1999 Constitution outlines the procedures for state creation, requiring approval from at least two-thirds of the Senate, House of Representatives, State House of Assembly, and Local Government Council in the affected area.
