Reps Commence Assessment Of Air, Sea Terminal Operators

The House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee on Port Concessions has commenced an assessment of air and sea terminal operators, focusing on compliance with concession agreements, transparency, accountability, and value for money.

At an investigative hearing with stakeholders in Abuja, Chairman of the Committee, Kolawole Akinlayo, described the exercise as a critical phase in evaluating the 2006 port concession regime, aimed at boosting efficiency, attracting private investment, and improving infrastructure in Nigeria’s aviation and maritime sectors.
Akinlayo added that the committee’s mandate is to assess performance, determine value for money, identify gaps, and ensure that the intended objectives of these concessions are met in a transparent and accountable manner.

The Director of Ports and Cargo Terminal at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, Olayiwola Olarewanju, outlined investments by terminal operators, including increasing trucks from 20 to 125 and upgrading reach stackers, forklifts, terminal tractors, and container handlers. Infrastructure improvements, including quay reinforcement and facility renovations.
Olarewanju also highlighted gains in operational efficiency, IT systems, cybersecurity, and human capital development.
