NUC Intervenes in UI VC Selection Process

The Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC) has intervened in the selection process of Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the University of Ibadan.

Consequently, it has directed the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka to recuse himself from the process.

Olayinka would be leaving the office on November 30.

The commission also ordered the recommencement of the selection process while reinviting the initial 18 applicants for the coveted seat.

The commission's directive is contained in a letter obtained by our Correspondent and signed by the Deputy Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission, Chris Maiyaki on behalf of the Minister of Education.

The letter was in response to University of Ibadan Chairman of Council, NDE Joshua Waklek, notifying the Education Minister, Adamu Adamu on the council’s decision to continue the selection process after the first attempt on October 28 was cancelled following protests by Non-teaching staff of the University.

Meanwhile, an attempt by the outgoing Vice-Chancellor. Prof. Olayinka to reconvene an emergency senate meeting today Wednesday, November 25 has been resisted by some members of the senate.

Some of the Professors who declined to attend the meeting said it is totally out of place for them to be invited to a meeting barely 24 hours without adequate preparations.
