Kalu Want Addressing Of Case Backlogs Crippling Nigeria’s Judicial System

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has emphasized the urgent need to address the massive backlog crippling Nigeria’s judicial system.
As of the first quarter of 2024, superior courts reported over 243,000 pending cases, with civil disputes sometimes dragging on for up to 20 years.
Speaking at the 2025 Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Abuja Law Week themed “Unlocking Opportunities: New Frontiers,” Kalu explained that this dire situation inspired him to sponsor a bill to set clear timelines for civil and criminal cases.
The proposed constitutional amendment mandates superior courts to deliver judgments within 270 days of filing and inferior courts within 210 days, excluding election petitions. The bill has since passed its second reading in the House.
Kalu also stressed the importance of embracing technology, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI), to improve justice delivery.
He highlighted AI’s potential in legal research, case management, and overall judicial efficiency.
Calling for a shift from traditional legal practice to tech-driven, specialized fields, Kalu encouraged young lawyers to explore opportunities in LegalTech, blockchain, cryptocurrency law, and AI
