FG Assures On Eradication Of Malaria

The Federal Government has assured of eradication of malaria in the country. The Minister of State for Health, Dr Iziaq Salako, at the launch of Malaria Consortium Nigeria 2026–2029 Strategy in Abuja, said Nigeria is moving beyond malaria control to total eradication of the ailment.

the Minister, represented by Dr Charles Uzelu, said the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s sector-wide approach to healthcare, stressing that Nigeria is looking forward to the day it will receive certification as a malaria-free nation.

The National Coordinator of the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain, Abdu Mukhtar, stated that Nigeria loses about $1 million annually to malaria treatment gaps and productivity losses.

He called for increased local production of malaria-related APIs, diagnostic test kits and insecticide-treated nets to address supply challenges.

The Malaria Programme Manager at the World Health Organization, Dr Lynda Ozor, described the strategy as a renewed commitment to tackling malaria and other communicable diseases.

Dr. Olusola Oresanya, Senior Advisor, Malaria Consortium, said the new strategy represents a bold, data-driven and innovation-focused approach.

Stakeholders said the renewed commitment will accelerate efforts toward eliminating malaria and securing a healthier future for Nigerians.
