Deputy senate leader faults agitation for restructuring
The Deputy Senate Leader, Senator Bala Ibn Na'Allah has faulted the ongoing clamour for restructuring of the country, describing it as unpatriotic.
Na'Allah, who addressed Senate correspondents on the matter in Abuja, stated that the concept of restructuring does not exist in the dictionary of the framers of Nigerian constitution.
He maintained that the architects of the demands for restructuring and fiscal federalism probably did not understand the context from which the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was fashioned.
He added that democracy is a recurrent subscription, whereby more than half of the people must be right more than half the time.
The calls for restructuring of the country is coming from prominent quarters in the country amidst rising tension and secessionist agitation across the country
Also, reacting to calls for the scrapping of the Senate, Na’Allah said those calling for the scrapping of the Senate were doing so out of Ignorance.
He said the framers of the Nigerian constitution established a bicameral legislature to protect other ethnic groups in the country from being marginalised.
The deputy Senate leader noted that the creation of the Senate is to ensure that there was no disparity in representation that will exist in a unicameral House of Representatives.
According to Na’Allah, over 50 percent of the members of the House of Representatives are from the north and as such could influence any bill in their favour against the south.
