Coalition Accuses Judiciary of Threatening Democracy

A coalition of concerned Northern Nigeria stakeholders has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately halt all forms of interference with the judiciary, warning that such actions threaten the foundation of Nigeria’s democracy.

The Protesters, with placards of various inscriptions at the Federal High Court, Abuja, decried the spate of injustice being perpetrated under the umbrella of the Country's Judiciary.

Addressing journalists during a peaceful protest at the Federal High Court, Abuja, the convener of the group, Banki Shariff, said democracy cannot survive under intimidation or manipulation, stressing that civic space, dissent, and a vibrant opposition remain critical to a functioning democratic system.

He also warned that attempts to weaken opposition parties or deploy legal technicalities for political advantage signal a dangerous drift toward authoritarianism that could undermine constitutional order and national stability.

The group urged the judiciary and the Office of the Attorney General to maintain strict neutrality and uphold the rule of law, cautioning that any compromise could erode public trust.
